Fitters
A Fitter’s main objective at Somerville Industries is the fabrication of a variety of metal structures from oral directions, sketches, drawings and blueprints. Below you will find specific qualifications for each “level”.
Fitter Level 1
Starting Wage - $16.25/HR
Ability and desire to learn new tasks
Pass AWS weld test and receive Somerville weld certs
Complete Somerville Crane and Forklift certification
Advanced interpretation of detailed drawings, weld symbols, weld procedures and measurements to plan layouts
Intermediate knowledge of operating MIG welding equipment, basic shop tools and measurement tools
Keep shop clean and safe – free from debris and spills
Returns all equipment, parts, etc. to proper storage areas in accordance with 5S system
Follow safety regulations and proper PPE usage
Lay-out, position, align, and secure parts during assembly using all forms of measurement
Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies with precise measurement utilizing temporary fasteners to hold part in place
Removes rough spots from workpiece using appropriate tools
Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or welding equipment
Perform other miscellaneous projects and duties assigned by shop foreman
~ Generally 1-3 years experience
Fitter Level 2
Starting Wage - $20.00/HR
Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using precision measuring tools
Advanced knowledge and understanding of detailed drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations under minor supervision
Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts
Provides a variety of skilled fitting/welding of steel and uncommon materials and shapes
Intermediate proficiency in a range of analytical processes or procedures to carry out assigned tasks
Consistent demonstration of desire and proven ability to learn new tasks
Proficient with all Fitter Level 1 Skills/Tasks
~ Generally 3-7 years experience
Fitter Level 3
Starting Wage - $21.75/HR
Volunteer and perform other miscellaneous projects and duties assigned by shop foreman
Forward thinking and planning ahead for next assignment
Creates team environment, help mentor/coach Fitter Levels 1 and 2
Maintain and repair most shop machinery
Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques
Independently carry out all assigned job tasks and desire to lend a helping hand
Help in troubleshooting problems throughout shop using experience and knowledge
Proficient with all Fitter Level 1 & 2 Skills/Tasks
Demonstrates desire to assist others
Participation and Involvement in Somerville Safety Program
May be required to travel to jobsites away utilize company vehicle
~ Generally 7-10+ years experience

*Evaluation of class will be based off performance review, attendance, safety performance
*Years of experience are a general guideline, no guarantee for level increase
